Finnish landrace goats were found back in 2800 to 2300 BCE. The native goats of Finland are crossbred with other Imported European breeds, mostly from Switzerland, to obtain this Finnish Landrace Goat. These goats are also called Finngoat. There are a lot of colors that are available in this breed and these colors are white, grey, and pied. These goats have a variety of horned and polled individuals. Finnish Landrace is bred for milk production. These goats are bred in Finland where meat is not a priority so these goats are preferred because of their milk production.


    Origin

    The Finnish Landrace goat breed was first developed almost 4000 years ago. It is one of the ancient goat breeds still found on earth. Finnish Landrace goats are named after their place of origin i.e. Finland. These goats, also known as Finn Goats, are bred intentionally for the purpose of milk production. Some European goat breeds were crossbred with the native goat breeds of Finland to obtain these goats. They are commonly found in the place of their origin but rarely available all over the world. They are rather used for milk production in Finland but also serve for meat purposes globally.

    Characteristics

    Finnish Landrace goats are medium-sized goats. They have a thick coat of coarse hair on their body. These goats are not heavy and do not have any extra fat on their body. They have long bodies that involve the hind legs and the back. In addition to the thick coat, they have a dense undercoat as well that keeps them warm in extreme climatic conditions. These goats have a beard on their face. Some of these goats are polled and some of them are horned. The common colors of these goats include grey-black, plain black, plain grey, pied, and saddled color.

    Weight

    The Finnish Landrace goats are lighter in weight. On average, the Does weigh within the range of 40 kg to 60 kg (88 lbs to 132 lbs) and the bucks may weigh within the range of 50 kg to 70 kg (110 lbs to 154 lbs). Along with weight, height also contributes to body weight. The taller the goat is, the heavier the body will be. The average height to withers in does is around 24 inches whereas for bucks is around 28 inches.

    Uses

    As mentioned earlier, the Finnish Landrace goats are bred especially for the purpose of milk production. The famous dairy products sold in Finland include Finnish cheese and feta. These goats are kept in small herds and are milked with hands. On average, they milk around 3 to 4 kg per day. The best performers among them may yield 1000 to 1500 kg of milk per year. Keeping them is one of the favorite hobbies of the farmers. They are not majorly used for meat purposes but their meat is also delicious. Young goats are usually preferred for meat consumption.
