Mangalica pig is a domestic pig breed. It originated from Hungary. The other names of this breed are Manglitsa and Manglitza commonly called in the United Kingdom and the United States respectively. In the mid 19th century, the Mangalica pig breed was first originated. The parent breeds involved in crossbreeding were European wild boar, Serbian Sumadija breed, and Hungarian breeds belonging to Szalonta and Bakony. Hungarian pig breeds were bred with European wild boar and the Serbian Sumadija breeds. Hungarian farmers developed this breed on intention. Initially, it was known as Bruce. This breed is registered with the British Pig Association.


    Mangalica Origin


    The origin of the Mangalica pig breed is from Hungary. In the year 1830, Hungarian farmers first developed this breed. Later on, in the year 1927, the national society of Fat-Type Hog Breeders was established to improve this breed. Mangalica pig breed got game in 1950 and became one of the prominent breeds of time. In 1943, upon estimation, almost 30,000 heads of Mangalica pigs were found in Hungary. Now the popularity of this breed is decreasing with the decrease in number. Considering their breeding rate, they are producing almost 60,000 piglets every year in Hungary. In the year 2006, Mangalica pigs were first imported to the United Kingdom.


    Mangalica Facts


    Mangalica pig breed is available in three different breeds that are characterized as Swallow-belied, Blonde, and Red. The colour of all three breeds differ, but the characteristics and behaviour resemble. When Blonde Mangalica and Black Mangalica were bred together, Swallow-bellied breed originated. The red breed came into being when Blonde Mangalica and Szalonta breed were crossbred. Talking about the third breed, the Blonde Mangalica originated in colour, and the Swallow-bellied breed has a black body with blonde belly and feet whereas the red breed is ginger. All of the three breeds are small to medium-sized animals serving for meat production.

    Mangalica Weight


    The Mangalica pig is small to a medium-sized animal. The overall weight of these pigs increases with age. With time, they become mature and gain the maximum weight they can. The weight slightly differs in male and female Mangalica pigs. The average weight of a male Mangalica pig is in the range of 68 to 77 kg, whereas the average weight of a female Mangalica pig is in the range of 64 to 73 kg. At the time of birth, the average weight of a Mangalica pig is in the range of 600 to 1000 grams. In almost 7 to 8 weeks, they gain up to 8 kgs of weight.

    Mangalica Size


    The size of the Mangalica pig all three breeds is small to medium. They are slow maturing animals as compared to other pig breeds in the market.  They are preferred for meat at the age of 15 months. It is the perfect size for the production of quality meat. It is a domestic pig breed and raised for the meat. Their body contains high-fat content—their size and weight difference before and after the fattening period. After 12 months of their age, they are suitable for butchering or slaughtering for meat. Because after 12 months or one year, they become fully mature.

    Mangalica Lifespan


    The Mangalica pig breed lives for 15 to 20 years. They have a slow growth rate. They become mature after 12 months or one year of their age, and after maturity, they start breeding and ready to serve for meat production. During the growth period, from weaning, the average live body weight is about 30 kg. During the time phase of fattening, the early phase weight reported as 30 to 60 kg, the middle phase weight reported as 60 to 100 kg, and the late fattening phase weight reported as 100 kg and above. Their weight varies throughout their life.
