The African goose is a large, heavy bird having a long thick neck and wide heavy body. Distinct calls of male and female geese allow birders to identify them without seeing them. African geese can live up-to 10 to 15 years, so they are called the longest living goose.

They may not be as loud as a Chinese goose. The breed purpose of African geese is meat as they are heavily weighted birds. African goose is primarily used as a meat bird. However, single geese yield edible meat as it is 20 pounds. They are sometimes cross-bred with the Toulouse breed for improvement of meat production. Feather production is also a purpose for breeding African geese. African geese get raised on farms. When there is a potential threat, the male African goose will hiss at the enemy and become aggressive, while the female African goose is very protective. It will hiss at the enemy and feels threatened by her surroundings when no male is around. African geese can reproduce for many years by forming a bond with their mates.

The female goose has poor egg productivity. A female goose usually lays 20 to 40 eggs per year. Eggs of female African geese are extra-large, having white colour. The weight of their egg is 5 to 8 ounces. Their egg hatches in 30 to 32 days. They have curved feathers combined with their size, so they cannot fly. Like other breeds, the African goose is known to be hardy and easy to manage to survive in moist climates. African geese require extra care in the winter season as they can not survive in extreme cold. Both male and female African geese are known as low-maintenance birds. Usually, they are kept in a friendly environment. Mainly African geese feed on the grass in their natural environment. The Diet of the African goose is supplemented with bird food. African geese also eat plant material near ponds and small invertebrates. As African geese are an environment-friendly breed, they do not tend to get ill if provided with a natural environment like a good source of water and grass.
