Rouen duck is a domestic duck breed that originated before the 19th century in France. It is an old breed having heavyweight. Mallard ducks are considered the ancestors of Rouen duck; that’s why both these breeds resemble a lot. Mostly Rouen ducks are raised for general purpose or as decor because of their beautiful appearance. Their name is after a town in Northcentral France named “Rouen”. In the year 1800, Rouen duck was first introduced to England. In England, Rouen is identified by different names. In an area in the south-west, France, these ducks were called “Rhone”. Other names include “Roan” and “Rohan”.

    Rouen ducks and drakes both are identical to their ancestor breed names Mallard. The body colour of Rouen drakes is usually grey with black tail feathers and white-collar. They have deep claret breasts and heads of green colour. Contrary, the Rouen ducks are usually light or dark brown in colour with eye stripes and a crown of black colour. Speculum feathers of blue colour are present in both Rouen ducks and drakes. Rouen ducks are heavy ducks and are known specifically for this property. Rouen breeds can be distinguished from the Mallard breed with double stripes running under their eyes.

    Rouen duck lifespan is like other average ducks, i.e. 8 to 12 years. The Rouen ducks have a good growth rate but not appreciable. These ducks almost take a year to become mature. At least 7 to 10 months are required by Rouen ducks to reach maturity. Farmers raising these ducks have to show patience to get rewarded later. After one year of great care, these ducks are developed into dense, colourful, and full of flavour roasting ducks. Rouen ducks can lay up to 125 eggs in a single year. These eggs are hatched after a specific period of time.

    Rouen ducks are large-sized ducks. These ducks are squarer in shape. Rouen ducks are heavy by weight and on average may fall in the weight range of 4.1 to 5.4 kg. As there are two different types of Rouen ducks are raised in America, so the other type used for commercial purposes may weigh in the range of 2.7 to 3.6. The carriage of Rouen ducks is horizontal in shape with large size. Their body is large and blocky, having a level, deep keel. Their back resembles an arch from shoulder to the tail. Their heads are round in shape and have a medium-sized bill.

    Rouen ducks are easy to take care of. These ducks do not require any special care. But there are some precautionary measures that should be checked with time. Large-sized ducks usually get foot diseases like bumblefoot. So, the farmers have to look after their feet and clean them regularly. Proper time with water should be provided to regular check if there is any “wet feather disease” or not. Water has other benefits too like it retards the development of pests like lice, fleas, ticks, etc. these ducks should be adequately fed for their good health. All the precautionary measures should be checked on a regular basis.
