Turritopsis Dohrnii Pictures, Facts, Habitat, Lifecycle, Diet

Turritopsis dohrnii is considered the immortal creature on earth. It is a kind of jellyfish. They have an eternal life that may last long. It is not about living a long life; it is about maturity. They take a lot of time to get mature or do not get mature at all.

It is famous as “immortal jellyfish.” The size of an adult Turritopsis Dohrnii is 4.5 mm in width. It is believed that after reproduction, an adult may again transform itself into a juvenile polyp state. Their bodies may shrink, and their tentacles retract. They move to the floor of the ocean to start their life once again.

    Turritopsis dohrnii Facts

There are seven main most amazing facts of Turritopsis dohrnii.

    • The Turritopsis dohrnii can alternatively adopt both forms of jellyfish i.e., medusa form and polyp form.
    • It does not have a brain or a heart.
    • They can reproduce both asexually and sexually. They can revert to the polyp stage after reproduction.
    • They use the rarest process named transdifferentiation. In this process, the mature cells completely transfer themselves to another kind of mature cells.
    • They were discovered in 1883 but completely understood in the mid-1990s.
    • They prevent large bell size, starvation, reinvigoration, and cold water under 22 degrees celsius.
    • They are also called hitchhikers.

    Turritopsis dohrnii Habitat

Turritopsis dohrnii, like other jellyfishes, like to live in warm water. They don't need to only be found in warm water. Sometimes they are seen in cold water too. The origin of turritopsis dohrnii jellyfish is the Caribbean Sea (nutricula) and the Mediterranean Sea (dohrnii).

According to the place of their origin, they are named as Turritopsis dohrnii. These are immortal fishes and can choose their habitat according to the stage of their life. They reproduce in deeper water layers, but after conversion to the polyp stage, they travel back to the floor of the ocean.

    Turritopsis dohrnii LifeCycle

There are two main stages in the life cycle of Turritopsis dohrnii i.e., medusa stage and polyp stage. They can convert alternatively to both stages and use the process of transdifferentiation to transform into the second stage.

They use bell surfaces as well as tissue from the canal system for transdifferentiation. During conversion, it also develops some missing cells of the body for proper transformation and produces sensory cells again while transferring to the polyp stage.

They become sexually mature in less than 30 days if the temperature is optimum and up to 20 degrees celsius. If the temperature reaches 22 degrees, they can mature in 18 to 22 days.

    Turritopsis Dohrnii Diet

Turritopsis Dohrnii eats plankton and likes to eat tiny mollusks, fish eggs, and larvae. They are immortal jellyfish. They are immortal, but still, they have threats of being eaten by other creatures. Big creatures of the ocean can eat them as their feed.

They can be sucked by a nuclear power plant and get killed. Planktons can be easily found in the sea to eat. Fishes are also roaming around. They can easily capture food with the help of their tentacles and eat them as a whole.
