Welsh Blacks are a natural breed of British cattle that originated in the rugged hill and mountain country of pre-Roman Britain. It is believed that the breed is derived from Iberian cattle and existed in Roman times.

Naturally, most Welsh black cattle have black coats, as their name suggests, but some have red coats due to a recessive trait. Their long, thick coats shield them from sunburn and insects and lessen the effects of wind, rain, and snow. Welsh black cattle lose their coats in the spring to help them cool off when temperatures rise.

They are also shielded from rocky terrain by their strong hooves. The horned variant of Welsh black cattle has white horns with black tips. The weight range for Welsh black cows is generally between 1100 to 1400 lbs, whereas the weight range for Welsh black bulls is between 1,900 and 2,500 lbs.

    Foraging Ability

    These cows are known for their ability to efficiently convert pasture into meat, and they are also known for being great grazers. They thrive on pasture, making them cost-effective for grazing-based farming.

    Welsh Black Cattle, in comparison to other breeds, typically demand less input. They often thrive on marginal lands and require little to no supplementation.

    Maternal Traits

    The breed is well-known for its maternal instincts, mothering qualities, and calving ease. This can be utilized to make the breeding program go more smoothly and effectively.

    Welsh Black Beef is renowned for its great quality. The meat is popular in both local and premium markets due to its tenderness, flavor, and marbling.
